Breckenridge Grand Vacations Employees and Family Members Donate the Gift of Life!

Many people believe that most blood is needed after major disasters. However, daily personal emergencies and ongoing medical needs of thousands of patients require a constant and ready blood supply. It’s the blood already on hospital shelves that saves lives.

Every day in the United States, patients in hospitals, surgical centers and emergency treatment facilities need approximately 36,000 units of red blood cells; 7,000 units of platelets and 10,000 units of plasma. You are part of something bigger than yourself when you donate blood. This pay-it-forward moment, the simple act of giving blood, has the power to transform another life.

In April, Breckenridge Grand Vacations partnered with Vitalant, one of the nation’s oldest and largest nonprofit transfusion medicine organizations, to host the first of two blood drives this year. Thirty-two registered donors provided 30 units of blood – 26 units of whole blood and 2 units of “double red” which equates to four units. Of special note, 14 people were first-time donors! Each unit of whole blood is separated into platelets, plasma and red cells, thereby helping 3 people with each unit. This means 82 people will benefit from the donated blood!

We are especially grateful to each of our donors, Grand Timber Lodge and The Boot for providing their facility to host the blood drive.

Founded in 1943, Vitalant is one of the nation’s oldest and largest nonprofit transfusion medicine organizations. It comprises a network of about 120 community blood centers, each with its own history and legacy. Vitalant provides lifesaving blood and comprehensive transfusion medicine services for nearly 900 hospitals and their patients across the U.S.

Save the Date: The second BGV blood drive this year is scheduled on Tuesday, October 26.
