Celebrate Earth Day with us on April 22!

Now more than ever, it is so important to recognize ways we can all do our part to protect this amazing natural environment we live in. These are community efforts, in that they both build and protect our respective communities. At Breckenridge Grand Vacations, every day is Earth Day to some extent. Every year, the official holiday to celebrate this spectacular planet is April 22nd. While the Sustainability Department typically hosts an event to mark the day, unfortunately this year we will be limited to conduct our earthly celebrations individually due to the current state of COVID-restricted life. However, there is still a lot you can do on your own to make the day special and support the health of the Earth! Here are just a few ideas we’ve come up with and will be trying to do ourselves!

Local Clean-up Effort
Lace up your boots, grab some gloves, and scout your favorite outdoor area for any trash that shouldn’t be there. Get a group of friends together (keeping social distance of course) and make a fun day of it! Some areas we see a lot of litter are along Airport Road, around City Market, the Riverwalk Center and throughout the core of the town.

Personal Sustainability Audit
Take a little bit of time and put a magnifying glass on your own green habits and practices. Don’t be over-critical because we all have a lot of factors pulling us in different directions. See if there are some simple steps you can implement to be a little more sustainable on a day-to-day basis. If you need inspiration, reach out to Emily and Taylor in the Sustainability Department for tips or take a look at HC3’s Climate Action Toolkit here.

Grow The Garden
Ever wanted to grow some of your own fresh veggies? This is a great time of year to start planning if you want to try your hand or hone your skills in gardening. This can include indoor and outdoor plants, including leafy house plants that have great health benefits as air-cleaning experts. If you want to get into outdoor gardening but don’t have space at home, you can apply for a plot at the Breckenridge or Frisco community gardens here. HC3 also has some great gardening resources on their page.

Check Your Travel
Make an extra effort to minimize carbon-intensive travel for the day. If you do need to go out, try to maximize alternative, green commuting methods as much as possible. Choose public transportation, biking, or simply put one foot in front of the other. You might enjoy the route or the healthy benefits enough that you will want to do it more often too. Summit County has a great and convenient bus system!

Get Outside
All said and done, the most important thing to do on such a momentous day is to just get outside and connect a little more with our natural world. As human beings, it’s important for us to interact with the natural environment for our own health and it may also lead to greater appreciation for what it offers and provides for us day after day. Do your body a favor – get outside, take a deep breath and take a good look around.

We would love to see pictures or hear about how you celebrated this day from afar! Send your photos to BGVSustainability@breckenridgegrandvacations.com.

In addition to our favorite April holiday, we would like to announce the roll-out of a new effort BGV Sustainability is excited and happy to support. We are promoting Community Cleanup – a personal clean-up day for individuals to participate in as they are able. This is similar to our past group clean-up efforts, but on a more consistent and individual basis. We encourage you to set aside some time once a month to help beautify our community, whether that’s on your way to work or walking around your neighborhood! You can even use your compensated volunteer time (VTO) to do so. We would love to see you include friends, family and other BGVers in your Community Cleanup efforts. If you’d like to set up other clean-up days with your team or on a larger scale, just let us know and we are always happy to help with that too!
